Significant solids deposition within a two km section of Alberta Capital Region Wastewater Commission's (ACRWC) sanitary sewer transmission system resulted in: a sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) in 2016; ongoing partial blockages; significant resource allocation; and the removal of over two million kgs of solids resulting in costs in excess of $1M over a two-year span. These unwelcome impacts triggered an initiative to reduce the discharge of solids from municipal sewer flushing activities into the regional transmission system by developing a Code of Practice for ACRWC's thirteen member municipalities. Other initiatives surround increased monitoring, focused Source Control activities and member and hauler educational outreach.
